Walking for what?

A jangling noise persists as I hurriedly run down the never ending stairs. Living on the third floor isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. As I continue down the stairs that have plagued me for the last two years, I can’t help but notice the clanking sound of metal from the oval shaped zippers on my Nike backpack. The giant door that leads into our hall slams loudly behind me making the whole front of the building shake. I honestly don’t understand how anyone can stand that noise. Preparing myself to walk down even more flights of stairs, I hear the screeching beep of the ID scanner behind me, signifying that he/she is worthy of entering the fine establishment known as Wanberg Residence Hall.

Traversing through the upper campus parking lot there is a wide variety of cars from Mustangs and Porsches to broken down trucks and cars that look like they aren’t capable of going more than 2 miles without breaking down. Yes, this is most definitely a college campus. As an overweight campus safety officer whizzes past me on his electric cart, I notice an accumulation of cigarettes left all over the ground from some edgy young adults who must’ve not been informed of the dangers of lung cancer. A young father and son practice some basketball drills on our school’s local basketball court. The boy can’t be much older than 4, but is still getting the ball in the net as his father watches is on and encourages him. I’m pretty sure at that age I couldn’t get the ball up that high. Maybe this kid will turn out to be the next Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan. Probably not, but maybe. Continuing my brisk walk I observe herds of students pile into the SLC eager to get to their classes 5 minutes late. I wonder how many people will fail their tests and how many will get As. How many disappointed students have walked out of this building? How many excited students have walked into it? I can only imagine the stories that this building could tell were it able to speak. The thunderous sound of an airplane flying over head breaks my train of thought as I continue walking down the path to The Walkers instillation.

The Walkers is the reason why I made this perilous trek to the other side of Whittier College’s campus in the first place. Over the last few weeks groups of constructors and workers have been implementing this new addition to Whittier College. Approaching The Walkers piece I wonder what purpose that it serves to the students hear at Whittier College. Is this a piece of art that will stop and make visitors to the campus “ooooh” and “aaaah”? Is this piece suppose to motivate students to continue with their daily college struggles? Is this meant to promote Whittier College’s new president Linda Oubre’s message about diversity on campus? I stopped in front of the display to ask some people how they felt about The Walkers and what purpose they think it serves on campus.

The interviewee then asking me permission to leave speed walks away towards the CI to catch up with some friends or cram in a meal before her next class or maybe she was just creeped out by me stopping her to ask questions. Neither person interviewed seem to care about the implementation of The Walkers. Is this because college students are so busy that they don’t have time to stop and appreciate a piece of art or is it that they generally don’t see any value that comes from the addition of The Walkers?
