INSTINCT

FLASH FICTION

It felt like years since the earth yawned open swallowing his mother whole like a gargantuan monster consuming the world.

The horror of it had paralyzed him until some innate instinct kicked in. He had traveled many miles since then as his body constantly reminded him.

The rage and grief of that moment at times threatened to snatch his own will to live away from him.

Somehow some primitive part of himself, that fought for survival above all else, managed to push those thoughts aside in a single-minded focus that set a grueling pace with little rest.

Strung along by an intuitive force that lessened as he near the coastline, he kept moving, until hunger drove him to pilfer or some kind soul took pity.

Something was different here. Kaylyn stopped to sniff the air tagging the lingering smells; salt, sea, flora and fauna, old dust and wet dirt. Everything was more intense now, even his senses were sharper more accurate.

He knew from the smells that he needed to find shelter soon or get caught in heavy rain.

He was at the edge of the forest where he could peek out into an open field, opposite that an old paved road on its far edges. He could see an old billboard sign that still stood, it read:

On the other side of the paved road, he could see a single building. It was surrounded by a tree line, with one bigger tree jutting from its roof spilling out like extra appendages. It’s stained glass mosaic window, still intact. It read: Blue Orchid Café.

The gnawing pain in his middle had faded; however; he knew he needed to find food more than shelter.
