Story From Nothing to Software Engineer

Hello everyone 2021 just begin hope you guys keep stay at home and stay healthy, today i’m gonna tell my story and tips how to be a software engineer if you don’t have a basic or if you guys wanna try to be a software engineer but confused how to start it 😀.

When i was in college many of my friends wondered “how can you be a software engineer but you don’t have a background computer science” and this is my story.

When i was graduated from high school in 2012, i worked at one of IT solution company at sudirman street in south jakarta as an animator for 2 years, yeah an animator not a software engineer for started my career. i started my career as animator because when i was in high school i was majoring in animation. in high school i studied drawing, design, design tools, 3D tools, 2D tools and also i made a video animation as my final project and there’s no programming at all.

So which part i am in the team as an animator? i’m part of animate team. animation what i made is not like upin ipin or tom n jerry, but interactive animation (2D animation), Interactive animations seek active participation from the viewers, we allow users for interact our animation so user can choose direction the video will progress (like a black mirror bandersnatch). because of those animation i learn a programming. i remembered i’m using adobe flash for animate btw.

I remembered, Action script 3.0 is my first programming language. beside working on the animate image, i made pause and play button, made a popup with dynamic title. sound easy huh? yes of course because they have a template so i just following it and i did this for 1 years. and one day, one of my manager he offered me a chance to be a programmer, he made a new team so i join the team as programmer BUT is not literally a programmer but is animator that a made interactive video with a new code (challenge accepted 🤘).

why do i accept the offer even though i don’t have a basic programming? because my manager said “you have a potency” so i take the offer and beside that i need a money for studied. after i took the offer, i continued studying at mercubuana university majoring in system information.

How do i study programming?

many of my friends talk to me like “how to start a coding and what is the best programming language that i should learn first?” and here is my tips 🤘

You must be able to use at least one language so what’s the best language for a newbie? you can choose php or java because a lot of tutorial on the internet that explain basic, setup and how to deploy the app to production because of it i recommended those language. you can learn oop (object oriented programming), procedural, etc.

In Tech industry many of position as software engineer you have to know first before you choose the position. position in tech industry among others are Frontend engineer (Web, Mobile (ios and android)), Backend engineer, devops, data engineer, data analyst and etc, you have to choose one of them. if you want to be frontend mobile android you can learn java, kotlin, flutter or if you want to be ios engineer you can learn swift and objc.

2. Read and follow tutorial

Read a couple of book about programming, article and follow the tutorial for a practice. practice make a perfect isn’t it? here is a couple youtube channel and have such a good tutorial for start a language programming :

3. Mentor (optional)

You can find a friends to study programming or you can take offline course, those things help you to understand programming. if you don’t have a money for take a some course, you can join a community about coding also.
