Ode to the Stillness

This. Here. Now.

Glowing green dishwash liquid,
morning sun through tree branches,
dream catcher’s recycled glass,
soap on granite,
paintbrush,
onions and garlic,
silver curved sink spout,
quiet hum refrigerator motor,
boiling water kettle,
Kenyan AA french press brewing.

This.
Here.
Now.

Momentary Stillness
before the chaotic conversations,
laughter, schemes, arguments,
cooking pots sizzling full of spinach and beetroot,
convection oven whirring with morning loaves,
dog barking at baboons on the road,
motorcycle speaker blaring Dolly Parton,
workers calling greetings over the fence hedge —
before all the action and Life and Love.

My mind is clear.
My stomach empty.

This Morning.

As the remnants of yesterday
turn heads toward present,
and await the future.

In This Moment
there are no memories,

no paranoid delusions,
no accusers, no abusers
no lawsuits,
protection orders,
divorce papers.

Chaos,
is an ocean away,
a lifetime away.

The strength of stillness is not in force,
but acquiescence.

Let Life blow and bluster,
then lay down to exhausted sleep,
sucking it’s weary thumb.

Stillness shall quietly return.

No one recognizes a returning king.
but this is as it should be.

Just as Stillness wishes,
daily defeat and resurrection,
All Eternity,
Secretly,
Silently.
