Control Your Habits by Understanding Them

This article on habits would be a three part guide. The first part involves understanding how habits work.

Every human has habits that have become a part of them. The big question is — are they positive habits or negative habits?

From the moment you are born, you start developing these habits unconsciously.

One of the first habits that a lot of kids first develops is sucking on their thumbs or watching cartoons the first thing in the morning before preparing for school.

As you grow up from childhood into becoming teenagers and then adults, these habits also mature with us.

A classic habit that almost everyone that goes to work early has is drinking coffee.

And that isn’t even the crazy part. America doesn’t even rank in the top five coffee consumers in the world.

The coffee drinking habit is one that a lot of people have.

Many find it very difficult to function or concentrate at work without their early morning cup of coffee. But the moment they have a cup of coffee, they feel energized and ready to hit the ground running.

Slowly but surely, all these routines and behaviors becomes the foundation of who we are whether we know it or not.

There is a lot of power that comes with habit but we haven’t realized it yet.

If you can’t control your habits — especially the negative habits, they can end up ruining not just your day but your life in the long run.

Get a piece of paper now and write down the habits that you engage in the most.

Now do a survey on which of these habits are worth keeping and the ones that you should discard.

This is the first step you have to take on the journey to control your habits.

It is important to understand that not all habits are positive. You would need to exchange these negative habits with positive ones.

For some of us, we realize early on that we have bad habits. We then spend a lot of time on the internet finding solutions to these problems, quizzing friends and families and even hiring coaches or seeing counselor to help steer us in the right direction.

The question now is — do all these solutions really work?

It is very difficult to get rid of habits that you have been developing over many years.

It has become second instinct to constantly check social media to see if you have notifications or take a big bowl of ice cream and chips whenever you are watching TV even though it might be hurting your health…. and a lot more vices that we engage in.

You first have to understand how habits form and work before you can get rid of them.

Before you can make any conscious effort to get rid of your negative habits and create new positive ones, you first have to know what a habit is.

There are two ways or modes in which your brain makes decisions whether subconsciously or consciously. We would call these process Mode 1 and Mode 2.

Mode 1 is the subconscious process in which we make decisions.

It is done most times without our input — that is the process is automatic.

It requires little or no effort or energy on our part and is highly efficient.

A good example is the process of running or walking. It is an automatic process that does not require our brains to intentionally work. This process comes naturally to you.

It is a way of thinking that is controlled intentionally by us.

For you achieve success and sustain focus, it would require energy and effort. For example is coming up with attire that you wear to an event or what you would cook for dinner.

Both modes works hand in hand.

When you are faced with a problem that needs a solution, your brain first uses mode 1.

Mode 1 is less energy consuming and does not need too much processing on your part.

If after using mode 1 and there is no solution to the problem, the brain then moves over to mode 2.

This shift in processes is the way your brain learns how to handle problems in the future. It creates a problem-solving-map.

For this subheading, we would use learning a new instrument as the habit you want to develop.

When you first start out as newbie, your brain have not formed a problem-solving map for the new activity.

Everything is new and strange so to handle the issue, the brain makes use of mode 2. You would have to consciously think through every step as you learn the new instrument.

With time this simple map-ways become very sophisticated at finding solutions to the problem .

After several months, playing the instrument would become automatic and without effort. At this stage, you have migrated from using Mode 2 to making use of Mode 1.

This is the same process through which habits have formed.

Now that you have a good idea of how habits are formed, you can then start to learn how to control your habits. But before we go into that, let us understand the types of habits:
