Blink.

Something that astounds me is how much perspective can have an impact on a person’s experiences. I’m not just talking about mindset or outlook here, I mean literal, tangible viewing angles on the world around you.

The engagement I saw of the community around me, not just the entertainment and brilliant creative minds on display, made Blink truly special for me. There were people of all backgrounds (1 million over four days, in fact) who participated in a kaleidoscope of colors in the downtown neighborhoods. Stately murals on the side of buildings, thought-provoking art, and exhibits that were just plain fun helped crowd the streets. I found myself watching people rock back and forth on light up seesaws, not mesmerized by the lights, but by the young, old, black, white, short and tall, all smiling and laughing over the same thing.

I’m occasionally asked, “Why do you live down there?” and I usually answer as such — I can park my car on Friday and get back in it on Monday morning. But it’s so much more than that. And all of that got put on display over this past weekend.

I walked to the library this afternoon to pick up a book, and went past a woman who stopped to take a photograph of the building across the street. Once I had walked past her, I stopped and turned. The building across the street had beautiful orange light from the setting sun splashed on its facade, and I thought that it may even look good in black and white, given the depth the changing light provided to the stone relief on the building. I’m glad that, just for a few brief days, we all got to have a photographer’s eye, and see the true beauty of the buildings and the people that we reside in and with as neighbors.
