Death on demand

Let he who would wake up one day and decide to have a vasectomy, as lightly as he might decide to try a new cafe, call abortion death on demand.

Let he who would breezily elect to have an appendix removed for no good reason, talk to us about how whimsically one might terminate a pregnancy.

Let he who would show up to have four wisdom teeth removed in the chair without trepidation, be the one to portray abortion as if it’s some kind of light entertainment.

Without much imagination, all of us can relate to the fact that abortion is a surgical procedure, with fear in advance, and physical recovery afterwards. It’s not a hedonistic experience that people indulge in, moral counsel be damned — it’s a medical procedure, done of necessity.

We shouldn’t punish as a crime that which carries so many inherent penalties already. It seems as necessary to me as a law banning sticking your dick in a meat grinder.

As we ponder the struggle NSW is having to remove abortion from the criminal code, let’s think for a second about the latest delaying tactic: a side scuffle over the idea of continuing to ban abortions done for the purpose of sex selection.

Meditate on this idea. It provides an important character reference for the quality of argument put forward by anti-abortion advocates. In all seriousness, they suggest that somebody would willingly fall pregnant, carry the pregnancy until such time as the foetus’ sex can be determined, and then with 50% probability, go through the arduous process of terminating the pregnancy.

All in the face of the knowledge that this could be done with so much less emotional, physical and financial suffering with IVF (and even then, it essentially does not happen, according to the chief obstetrician).

The anti-abortion campaign has called on this thought experiment to vouch for the character of their case. I’ll leave the jury to ponder what conclusions should be drawn from it.
